A New Love...

For someone who's always struggled with planning and organizing, I've always had a strange love for making lists.  Unfortunately, those lists haven't been nearly as helpful as I'd hoped, until now.

I was talking with my best friend last week about AD/HD.  I was getting frustrated because it seemed like now matter how hard I tried, or what steps I took to try and organize my racing brain, it just didn't get any better. As we talked, I realized that I was already, to some degree, doing a lot of the tricks she's uses to overcome her AD/HD.  It felt great to realize that I was on the right track, I just had to keep working and tweak a thing or two here and there and things would really start coming together.

Also, as my Mom pointed out to me Sunday night, I had to realize that I am not in control, God is (she knows me oh so well).  I have a tendency to think that I can control all the outcomes in my life if I just work hard enough.  All that typically gets me is stuck in a rut and completely frustrated.  But, when I FINALLY come around and say, "OK, God, I get it.  I can't do this on my own," and let go and follow His leadership, things start to turn around.

That being said, I've turned my battle to overcome my AD/HD over to God (it was always His anyway) and things are starting to look up.  I've even found something that I like more than making lists....marking things off the list!  There's something empowering about marking that line through an item on your list.  It's kind of like the stickers teachers use to put on our homework in elementary school or the little "Good job" note they would write.  Those little things always made me smile and so does marking an item off my list.  When I draw that line I hear "Good job Jen" in my head and I smile.  Even if it was a very small task, I feel like I accomplished something for the day and that gives me motivation to keep going.

So, to all my fellow AD/HDers out there, don't give up.  I know we tend to be impatient and impulsive but it WILL get better with time.  I also STRONGLY recommend turning your struggle over to God and letting Him fight your battle for you.  You will be amazed at the things that can happen when you "Let go and let God!"
